A Utah highway trooper and two other accident victims were injured Sunday in an I-80 accident near Lambs Canyon. The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. while the trooper was investigating an earlier incident on the highway.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the trooper was parked in the left-hand travel lane to investigate the first I-80 accident when he and the two other people were struck by a large vehicle.
The second I-80 accident occurred when a large truck pulling a trailer lost control of the vehicle, flipped and rolled over the officer’s vehicle parked in the westbound lanes, officials said. The driver of the truck was immediately ejected from the vehicle and flown to a nearby hospital with injuries.
As of late Sunday evening, troopers do not know what caused the truck to flip and roll down the highway.
The I-80 accident is still under investigation by UHP.
One of the accident victims who was in the original accident the highway trooper was investigating was sitting inside the trooper’s vehicle when the truck rolled over the car. The person did not suffer life-threatening injuries, but needed to be extricated from the trooper’s vehicle.
The trooper was also taken to the hospital with injuries.
Additional information about the trooper and the accident victims’ injuries have not yet been released.
