The perils of texting while driving is well known and causes countless accidents across the country. New research into texting and driving not only confirms these dangers, but finds that it is actually worse than drinking and driving.
Researchers at the University of Utah recently found that drivers who text are six times more likely to get in an accident than those who don’t. In addition, the impaired response time that comes while texting and driving is the equivalent of driving after consuming four alcoholic beverages.
Car and Driver reports that texters need 70 additional feet to react to an obstacle on the road, roughly 17 times the amount of a legally drunk driver. Distraction.gov states that the time a driver’s eyes are off the road while texting is equivalent to the time it takes to cover the length of a football field while traveling at 55 miles per hour.
Whenever you’re involved in an accident, no matter how minor it may seem, seeking the help of an Advocate should always be your first step.
