A 12-year old teenager was killed in an accident Saturday night just south of Fillmore. The accident occurred on US Interstate 15 shortly before 7 p.m. Two of the victims, Barry Speer, the 48-year-old father of the Speer family, and the teen driver responsible for the accident, were flown to Utah Valley Hospital in an emergency dispatch helicopter.
Utah Highway Patrol said the Speer family was driving down Interstate 15 when the van they were in suddenly veered into opposing traffic. The person driving the van was a teenage girl with a learner’s permit who was driving under her father’s supervision.

The teenage driver did her best to steer back into the right lane, but ended up turning the van over and sent it sliding across the interstate. The van then hit the embankment before rolling over and over, in the process ejecting Alex Speer, who died on impact, and his older brother, 14.
A total of six passengers in the van suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Fillmore Hospital. Only a 9-year old boy escaped the accident without injuries.
The accident is currently being investigated by Utah Highway Patrol.
According to friends of the family, the Speers were returning to their home in Escondido, California from a vacation in Idaho when the accident occurred.
