While traveling, you never know when you might have car troubles. If something happens to your car, packing an emergency kit can help reduce your down time, getting you back on the road sooner. Here are some must-have items to keep in your car:

  • Jack, spare and tire iron. All cars come with these three essentials, so they’re not necessarily emergency kit items, but they are critical. If you have a used car, double check to make sure you have all three. Also, make sure they’re in working order by having them checked out whenever you get an oil change.
  • Jumper cables. If your battery dies, jumper cables will give it enough charge to get you back on the road quickly. Jumper cables are two different colors, typically red and black. Start by connecting one color to the positive terminal on the good car and then connect the other end of that same cable to the positive terminal on your car. Repeat this process with the other cable on the negative terminals. Once connected, start the good car first and then wait a few minutes before starting your car. Once it starts, disconnect the cables in the opposite order you connected them.
  • Flashlight. Even though most phones now have a flashlight feature, if the power goes out in your car the last thing you want to do is needlessly drain your battery. A trusty flashlight is one that is mechanically powered, either with a crank or one that you shake, so that you don’t have to worry about packing extra batteries.
  • Phone charger. Always have a way of charging your phone in your car. In an accident or if you’re stranded, you need to be able to call for help at a moment’s notice.
  • Blankets. If you’re stranded in the cold waiting for a tow, have some blankets on hand to keep you warm.

While storing these items in your car will certainly be useful, it’s hard to control other drivers on the road. In those instances, a personal injury attorney can help you with the aftermath of an accident.
