Must Have Items For Your Car Emergency KitBrian Julkunen / 0 Comments /
What’s in your car? Are you prepared for the unexpected?
Most people think that having an emergency kit for the car is just for the winter months; however, that’s not true. You can be stranded at anytime, anywhere. There are several manufactures that sell different kits to help you stay safe. You can go online and search for a pre-made kit or simply make your own and customize it to your liking.
So let’s get prepared for the unexpected; this would make a great family project for a Sunday afternoon. Get the children involved and have them learn about emergency preparedness.
Remember, before any road trip, always check your car. Make sure all lights and blinkers are working; check all fluids (oil, washer fluid, antifreeze, etc.), tire pressure, and gas levels!
Every vehicle should have at least these items in the car at all times:
- A first aid kit
- Jumper cables
- Spare tire
- Portable shovel
- A tire pressure gauge
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Road reflectors and or flares
- Ice scraper
- Duct tape
- Small tool set
- Dry packaged food such as: canned nuts, granola bars, energy bars,
- Water and or Gatorade
- Portable cell phone charger
Get a plastic milk container (crate) to store these items in and place in the trunk of your car.
Make sure that every vehicle you own has a kit like this.
As a family, make it a priority to check these kits every two months.
In the event of an emergency:
- Get off the main road pull to the right shoulder if you can.
- Put your hazard lights on.
- Use your flares.
- Call for help.
- Stay in your vehicle with doors and windows locked for safety.
- Stay calm.
