Pedestrian Safety TipsLearn how to keep yourself safe while you’re walking or jogging.

Each year roughly 5,000 pedestrians are killed in traffic related incidents. Another 76,000 are injured. Don’t become a statistic. Learn how to keep yourself safe while you’re walking or jogging. Here are five tips that will help you become a more responsible pedestrian.

1. Wear the correct clothing

“By the time they see the person and try to move, it’s too late and an accident occurs.”

It doesn’t matter whether you walk at night or during the day, always wear reflective clothing or equipment. If you’re strolling around at night, also bring a flashlight. Many accidents happen because drivers don’t see pedestrians. By the time they see them and try to move, it’s too late and an accident occurs.

2. Know your area

Stay off of busy streets and use back roads, if you can. If you just moved to a new neighborhood, map out your route before you start jogging it. This will ensure you stay away from dangerous areas.

3. Don’t use the streets when they’re busy

Before taking a walk, check the traffic report. Streets are usually busiest during rush hour, so steer clear of them during this time.

4. Walk with a friend

If you normally run by yourself, ask a friend to accompany you. It’s always helpful to have an extra set of eyes on the road.

5. Stay off the street

When possible, use sidewalks. And never cross a street unless you do so at designated crosswalks and intersections.

If you are ever in a pedestrian-related accident in Utah, it’s important to gather insurance information from the driver and keep track of all your medical records. Then call The Advocates. We’d be happy to help you take care of the rest.
