Automobile v. Bicycles and Pedestrians

  • The United States’ pedestrian and bicycle accidents had alarming similarities and differences in 2015.
  • There were 4,884 pedestrians killed by automobiles, and over 65,000 injuries.
  • The amount of pedestrian accidents had decreased by 15.4% between 2014 and 2015.
  • Males accounted for 70% of the pedestrian deaths, and 73% of the accidents occurred in an urban area.
  • In comparison, there were 726 bicycle deaths and over 50,000 injuries that occurred after a bicyclist was hit by an automobile.
  • Between 2014 and 2015, the bike injuries increased by 11.1%.
  • Of the 726 bicyclist deaths, 80% of them were male, and 71% of the accidents occurred in urban areas.
