Police are putting blame on the so-called ‘Bird Box’ challenge for a crash in Layton, Utah early last week. The Utah teenager responsible for the Layton crash was apparently wearing a blindfold at the time of the collision.
The Layton crash occurred after a 17-year old teenage girl pulled the beanie she was wearing down over her eyes as she steered a gray pickup truck through traffic. It didn’t take long for the teenage girl’s actions to end in tragedy. The gray pickup truck soon collided with the driver’s side of another vehicle. Police said it’s a matter of luck that no one was injured in the Layton crash.
It wasn’t until the following Friday that Layton police learned that the Utah teenager was participating in the viral sensation known as the ‘Bird Box’ challenge, which is based upon the recent blockbuster science fiction film released by Netflix. In the movie, characters are forced to wear blindfolds as a protection against an unseen threat, whose very sight drives people into a suicidal madness. In response to the idiotic challenge, a spokesman for Netflix was forced to issue a warning to its viewers: “PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.”
“Honestly I’m almost embarrassed to have to say ‘Don’t drive with your eyes covered’ but you know apparently we do have to say that,” said Layton Police Lieutenant Travis Lyman. “The stakes are just so high and it’s just such a potentially dangerous thing as it is: to try and do it in that way is inexcusable. It really puts everybody at risk.”

The Utah teenager responsible for the Layton crash was likely following in the footsteps of various craven YouTube provocateurs, such as Jake Paul. Luckily, moderators at YouTube have had the good sense to take down such videos. If only they’d take one more responsible step by simply banning such desperate and talent-less online celebrities altogether. One can only hope.
