A man who had recently moved from Arizona was killed in a crash early Thursday morning in West Jordan, Utah. Local police said the man had crashed into a boulder after fleeing police earlier.
The crash victim was later identified as Suwipya Silas, 21, from Tuba City, Arizona. He had moved recently to Salt Lake City after accepting a job at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Silas died shortly after midnight from the injuries he received in the crash.
Police began to pursue Mr. Silas after witnessing him make an illegal U-turn. The police officer tried to pull him over, but Silas sped away as soon as the officer turned on his police lights. The officer did not give pursuit.
Silas quickly turned onto Winchester Street and sped away. Silas then ran a red light and drove directly into large decorative boulders placed in front of a row of town houses.
“Witnesses said he just came through, didn’t even stop at the red light and hit the boulder at a high rate of speed,” said Sergeant JC Holt of the West Jordan Police.
Silas was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was consequently ejected from his vehicle. Police investigators do not know why Silas fled the way he did and are currently searching for reasons.
“That’s the mystery,” said Sergeant Holt. “The car was searched, and officers did not locate anything suspicious. There’s no drug paraphernalia, there’s no alcohol related stuff there. Nothing. And there were no obvious signs of impairment.
A coroner will conduct an autopsy on Silas to determine if he was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Winchester Street was closed for hours while police investigated and cleared the scene.
